Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Overview

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, is a complex chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system produces antibodies that attack the body's own healthy tissues and organs. Lupus can affect virtually any organ system, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain. The disease is characterized by periods of flares and remissions, and its presentation varies widely from patient to patient. Common symptoms include a butterfly-shaped facial rash, joint pain and swelling, extreme fatigue, fever, and sensitivity to sunlight. Our physicians have extensive experience managing lupus, including lupus nephritis and other serious organ involvement, using a combination of immunosuppressive medications, antimalarials, and careful monitoring.
