Gout

Overview

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. It typically presents as sudden, intense episodes of pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in a joint — most commonly the big toe, though it can affect ankles, knees, wrists, fingers, and elbows. Gout attacks often occur at night and can be triggered by dietary factors, alcohol consumption, dehydration, or certain medications. Without proper management, recurrent gout attacks can lead to chronic joint damage and the formation of tophi (deposits of uric acid crystals under the skin). Our rheumatologists provide comprehensive gout management, including acute flare treatment, long-term urate-lowering therapy, and dietary counseling to prevent future attacks.

Common Symptoms

Sudden, severe joint pain (often in the big toe)
Joint swelling, redness, and warmth
Attacks that often begin at night
Limited range of motion in affected joint
Peeling or itching skin as inflammation subsides
Tophi (uric acid deposits) in advanced cases

Treatment Options

Anti-inflammatory medications for acute flares
Colchicine for flare prevention
Urate-lowering therapy (allopurinol, febuxostat)
Dietary and lifestyle modifications
Regular uric acid level monitoring
Joint aspiration for diagnosis and relief
